Hey there, I’m Davide, an Italian designer rocking a Bachelor’s degree in Communication. I’ve taken a bunch of courses in visual design, motion graphics, and illustration. I jumped into the worklife design scene and have been at it for over 3 years now.

Would you like to see a new project right?

NO

I show you how I created this site instead

The concept behind www.davlaz.it is actually quite straightforward. First, I subscribed to a hosting service and used WordPress and Divi to build the website. My goal was to create a minimalist design with a slightly punk aesthetic that would showcase my work. The site consists of five pages, only one of which displays my real-life work, while the others are dedicated to illustrating my workflow.

Mood

When it comes to designing a portfolio website, the colors, fonts, and overall shapes are crucial. For my website, I opted for rectangular and pointed shapes with punk-inspired textures to create a distinct aesthetic. As for the fonts, I chose them somewhat randomly, aiming to create a messy and slightly crazy look. To ensure that each section of the site had its own identity, I assigned a unique color palette to each micro project. This approach resulted in a cohesive yet wildly imaginative site.

Wireframe

The information architecture phase is undoubtedly one of the most critical stages of website design. For my site, I wanted to create a unique and creative experience for the user. To achieve this, I decided to divide the site into five main areas, each showcasing small projects. Additionally, I chose to minimize the menu on the homepage, keeping it simple and gray to allow the colors to really pop on the rest of the site.

Portfolio

My portfolio is a key aspect of the website. Although the site has a defined color palette and structure, my real-life projects do not always align perfectly with them. Therefore, it was crucial to create a section that stood out from the rest, while still maintaining consistency with the overall design. To achieve this, I opted for a darker shade of gray, which highlights the portfolio section and gives it added prominence.

the statue

The website can be a bit static, so I decided to add some interactive elements for the user. Fortunately, this coincided with my desire to showcase my 3D design skills. I discovered a great plugin that allows users to manipulate a 3D model on the page, and I knew it was perfect for what I had in mind.

I created a low-poly, highly realistic statue model for the page, with the intention of keeping the site as lightweight as possible. To achieve this, I simplified the texture and lighting of the model. The original model can be seen below:
