The brief
Background
This brief addresses the high rates of sexual assault among individuals with Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome. These communities are significantly more vulnerable due to factors like dependence on caregivers, communication barriers, and social stigmas. Consent, a complex topic for everyone, is especially challenging here and is often under-discussed, under-reported, and under-addressed.
The Challenge
Create an idea (product, service, experience, or campaign) that gives people with Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome more agency over their sexual intimacy.
Objectives
- Think: “This feels right” or “This feels wrong. I know the difference.”
- Feel: Comfortable in good situations and confident in saying no to bad ones.
- Do: Enjoy intimacy or clearly decline it with agency and autonomy.
Target Audience
Primary: People with Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome. They often face infantilization but have valid and natural sexual and emotional experiences.
Secondary: Caregivers and close supporters, who play a major role in their lives and safety.
